Burns & McDonnell India (BMI) is expanding its Estimation team and is looking for experienced Engineers with a strong background in Transmission & Distribution (T&D) estimating, tendering, and proposal development. This role is ideal for professionals who excel in cost analysis, technical evaluation, and collaborative project execution within the power infrastructure sector.
About the Role
As an Estimation Engineer at Burns & McDonnell India, you will play a key role in developing accurate and competitive cost estimates for transmission lines, substations, and distribution projects. You will collaborate closely with teams in India and the United States, contributing to high-quality proposals that support major infrastructure developments.
This is a full-time, Bengaluru-based position with no travel requirements, aligned to U.S. business hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Review project specifications, drawings, and technical documents to clearly define project scope and resource requirements
- Prepare Class 5, 4, and 3 cost estimates (conceptual, feasibility, and budget authorization) using both factored and bottom-up methodologies
- Analyze RFPs and engineering documents to identify scope gaps, overlaps, and risks
- Perform detailed material take-offs for transmission lines, substations, and distribution systems using drawings and maps
- Develop comprehensive cost estimates covering materials, labor, equipment, and indirect costs in line with AACEi estimating standards
- Ensure compliance with internal estimating procedures and quality standards
- Work independently or in coordination with Lead Estimators from Burns & McDonnell’s U.S. offices
- Collaborate with engineers, project managers, vendors, and subcontractors to gather critical estimating inputs
- Conduct cost analysis to identify value engineering and cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or specifications
- Prepare detailed and competitive bid proposals that fully meet project and client requirements
- Maintain and update cost databases and historical estimating records
- Identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies to manage financial exposure
- Stay up to date with industry trends, market conditions, and advancements in estimating tools and techniques
- Participate in regular coordination meetings with U.S. teams to align on scope, schedules, and deliverables
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline
- 5 to 15 years of experience in T&D estimation, tendering, or proposal roles
- Proven experience in substation and transmission line projects
- Strong knowledge of power transmission and distribution systems, including overhead lines and underground cables
- Familiarity with electrical construction practices, industry codes, and regulatory requirements
- Understanding of engineering, procurement, contracts, and construction (EPCC) processes
- Knowledge of cost structures, including fixed and variable costs, and their impact on project budgeting
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with tools such as InEight, HeavyBid, CostOS, or Sage EOS is an advantage
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- A continuous learning mindset and adaptability across diverse project environments
- Willingness to work permanently in the second shift (12:30 PM – 9:00 PM IST) to support U.S. operations
